English III CP                                                                                              January 21, 2014

Ms. Amy Elliott

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to welcome you to a successful year in English III CP at Green Sea Floyds High School. All work in this course will be standards framed, and I encourage you to review these standards in the 2013 – 2014 Student Parent Handbook provided by the Horry County School District and/or on the HCSD web page www.horrycountyschools.net .

Student learning will encompass the enhancing of communication skills, reading, writing, processing, and research. Language skills, such as usage, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, and sentence structure, will be taught through direct instruction and through individualized student reading and writing. Test preparation exercises will also be included in our curriculum. All students are required to complete an evidence folder that is comprised of assignments completed during the course.  I have included a copy of the requirements for the evidence folder within this packet of information.  English III CP students will also take the End of Course Writing Assessment which will count as 30% of his/her final exam grade.

The district provides access to a wide variety of reading materials and resources in promoting literacy for students.  In selecting the materials and resources for classroom libraries and media centers, teachers and media specialist follow the general procedures that may be found on the district webpage at http://www.horrycountyschools.net/cms/One.aspx?portalId=743462&pageId=1199932 and media center and classroom library procedures that may be found at  http://www.horrycountyschools.net/cms/One.aspx?portalId=743462&pageId=1392268.

One of our schools’ primary goals is to develop lifelong learners, with literacy being a key component in this process. Reading a wide range of materials helps our students develop these literacy skills.  While our school’s classrooms and media centers make every effort to provide only the highest quality reading materials, we understand that parents want to help their children make a wise choice as it pertains to what their child reads. Parents who may have questions about their child’s reading material may contact their school media specialist to request additional information regarding the title, including possible professional reviews of the title.  The school media specialist will work collaboratively with parents to identify titles that will help develop a love of reading.

Student work is graded on a point scale. Points are assigned based on the difficulty and time constraints of a given assignment. Students will know deadlines and point values before beginning any assignment, and they also will be given rubrics before completing major assignments or projects. Students will receive a deduction in points for work that is turned in late without an acceptable absence excuse (medical or bereavement are normally acceptable). I expect students to appreciate the value of knowing how to meet deadlines. They certainly will face these expectations when they continue their education, enter the work force, and/or enter the armed services. I am available to schedule tutoring sessions for students who need extra help. Please note the following statewide grading scale that will be used for evaluation of assignments:

                                                A                     93 – 100

                                                B                     85 – 92                       ***Please note

                                                C                     77 – 84                       late assignments are

                                    D                     70 – 76                       minus  10 points per day.

                                                F                      below 70

Test/Projects/ Major Assessments -50%

Classwork/Homework-30%

Participation-20%

Students are expected to be in class and on time each day. When a student is absent, he/she always misses some work, and it is his/her responsibility for making up all work in the allotted time. For this class, the student will need a three-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, earbuds, # 2 pencils, and a blue or black ink pen. If providing these materials presents an undue hardship, please contact me.

All of us must work together for this to be a successful learning experience. I encourage you to contact me at any time during the semester. My planning time is 1:40-3:15, and I can be reached at 392-3131 extension: 2208  . You may also contact me via email at aelliott002@horrycountyschools.net.  I will make every effort to keep students and parents informed through periodic student and parent-teacher conferences, notes, telephone calls, and E-mail as well as quarterly and biweekly grade reports. I strongly encourage each parent to utilize Powerschool, which will allow you to access your child’s grades, discipline and attendance in each of his/her courses via the Internet at any time during this semester.

 Classroom Management Plan

The parents/caregivers are the first teachers and the home is the first classroom. Professional educators build on what a child brings to school. For that reason, each success and every concern should be shared by the teacher and parent whenever possible.

Below I have outlined my classroom expectations that will be in effect for the duration of this class. Please indicate you have read this information by signing the form at the end of the course syllabus. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concern.

Expectations

1.  Cooperate

2.  Respect teacher and classmates

3.  Give your best effort

4.  Come to class prepared

5.  No sleeping in class

6.  No gum, candy, food, or drink in the classroom

7.  Be on time

8.  Follow all rules and regulations of the Green Sea Floyds High handbook with consistency.

Positives

1.  Verbal praise

2.  Notes and calls to parents

3.  Homework passes

4.  Drop lowest daily grade

Consequences for Violating Classroom Rules and School Policy

First Offense            -           Warning and teacher conference with student

Second Offense       -           Break Detention

Third Offense          -           Break Detention and Parent Notification

Fourth Offense       -           Referral to Administrator

Severe disruptions will result in immediate referral to the appropriate administrator.

Clarification of the above rules:

1.  Respect your fellow students.  Do not talk when someone else has the floor. Feel free to courteously share your ideas with the class. We all learn from each other.

2.  No question asked sincerely is ever a dumb question.

3.  Have books, notebook, paper, and pen available when the bell rings.  I will not tolerate stragglers.

Check the board for the day's DOT, activities, and instructions. It would be helpful to immediately jot down the day’s agenda.

4.  Upcoming quiz/test dates and assignment due dates are also posted on the board. Check it every day and note dates in your agenda book as well as on your DOT.

5.  Bring supplies to class EVERY day.

6.  Written homework assignments are due at the beginning of the assigned class.  Written work assigned to be done in class is due when class ends, not the next day!

7.  The grade you EARN is the grade you will receive.   Do not ask me to give you points or "extra credit" at the end of the grading period.  You will have every opportunity to EARN your grade.

8.  Please attend to personal needs -- restroom visits, locker visits, and grooming, -- before coming to class.

9.  Absolutely no food, gum, beverages, cell phones, sunglasses, or other distracting paraphernalia in class.

10.  The dress code is in effect at all times.  Violation is viewed as insubordination.

11.  English class time is not available for homework completion or studying of other subjects.

12.  I will not tolerate off color, lewd, or insensitive remarks or gestures. Profanity in any work submitted will result in a zero on that assignment.

13.  Do not get out of your seat to sharpen pencils or go to the trash can while the teacher or presenter is talking.

14.  You will not be given permission to go to your locker or the office or another teacher’s room during class.

15.  Do not put your head down on your desk. If you are sick, please ask to go to the nurse’s office.

16.  Do not roll in desk chairs or sit with feet in the aisle. You are expected to sit facing the direction of the desk with feet under the desk. This is a safety issue.

Pre-dismissal: Last few minutes of class (tardies, behavior, exit activity)

Class is dismissed by the teacher – not the clock.

As your teacher, I require respect for all of us and this place.

As your teacher, my ultimate goal is for each student to become a lifelong reader and learner

PLease place your signatures on the form provided indicating that you have read this packet. Send that form to me, and have your child place his student evidence folder requirements in the front of his/her notebook.

I look forward to working with you to help your student be successful in my class this year.

Kindest regards,

Amy Elliott
